Really -- you do not have to be polite -- I think I had in mind more of a discussion -- I did not have a story sort of thing in mind --- after I posted it the first time I thought -- that is not a writing prompt, it is something I just got to thinking about. I am weird like that sometimes -- I have a tendency to question things.

I have very little time this morning -- so it will surely wait.

You overestimate how complicated writing prompts are. Pretty much anything can be a writing prompt. If you look on the first page, I used "a blue object" as a writing prompt. Discussions are fun too though.

I've never really understood the need to have fancy dishes(or fancy just about anything for that matter). When I went to college, I ate off paper plates most of the year, until I switched apartments and my roommate had some real plates.

We agree on that -- I do not care for fancy at all. That is not to say that I don't realize that things such as gaming, the Wii for instance, is my kind of extravagance !

As I pondered the issue of plates, it led me in many directions, I bought 4 plates -- white -- at Walmart
for $1.00 each. I like them -- they suit us quite well and match my black and white bear cups. I do however treasure my set of hand thrown pottery, I do not use it though, it is HR's Moms China Cabinet thing that we got after she left this world. So again -- what and why the value -- my mind roams in all directions this morning.

More to follow ................................

I thought a writing prompt was for story ideas --- not just thoughtful ramblings. See -- at the very least I have an opportunity to learn the meaning and intent of a writing prompt.

I am surprised you are posting so early ! Good morning.

I think for the most part I think that if an object(such as a set of plates or a china cabinet) are connected to a memory of a person or an event, we tend to feel a connection to those items. That's why you keep your handthrown pottery and the china cabinet even though they don't necessarily add any functionality to your life.

There are some people though that get fancy things just to show off how much money they have. Kind of a "keeping up with the Joneses" type of thing. That's mostly rich people though, that want to show their status. I'm sure they won't be too happy when they realize that the riches of this world mean little.

I've always thought a wandering mind was a good thing. It keeps you thinking and learning - always a good thing. Of course I've also considered myself a little bit ADD, so I might be a bit biased...

What I meant about the writing prompt wasn't necessarily that they are used to start discussions; it was just that you can use just about anything(including dinner plates) as a writing prompt. But a lot of times if you can start a discussion with something, you could use it as a writing prompt and vice versa. Just because it only has to get you thinking about something so you can write about it or talk about it.

Plus a lot of the time, it seems like when I write it's just my "thoughtful ramblings" plugged into a fictitious world.

I'm not really sure how much sense that made, hope it was understandable.

My sleeping patterns are pretty unpredictable. I woke up at 2:30 this morning. It was okay though because I fell asleep really early last night...

On a side note, I need a name for a person in one of the worlds I've got in my head. He's a mercenary who is trying to infiltrate a secret organization of thieves and murderers and gain their trust so he can get close to - and ultimately kill - their leader.

Any ideas?

I can honestly say --- I am not remotely interested in keeping up with anyone, and I do agree, things of this world will fall away.

I do not care for the china cabinet, I keep it out of respect for HR's Mom -- she loved it. My pottery was a very special gift from my husband, it is beautiful and I love things that are handmade and one of a kind, I do use it some, but I do fear it will get broken and so I do not enjoy using it, HR and my daughter feel we should use it.
I enjoy just having it and looking at it but it is not for material reasons or the worth of it. I do wonder if you are not right that for some people the value is the monetary value or as a status symbol. If so does that indicate
that the plate is more important than the food ? Hmmm -- I suspect in some cases it can be. I wonder how many more remember the value. It is a sad thing if material value is the measure of a possession. Sadly people are often judged in the same manner.

Now you have done it Oogy ! I keep thinking about that character. Oh my writing a book must be hard --
Just thinking of one name keeps running through my mind. Shall we start a list ? I must make sure JJ knows
about this.

Dungrievy
Valrone
Valastad

Hehe, glad to hear I got it stuck in your head :)

For me the names are one of the hardest(or maybe the hardest) parts of the book.

I like the name Valrone. I may use that as his alias(gotta have an alias so they don't know who he is when he's infiltrating the secret organization) or something.

Keep the names coming though if you have more. I'm sure I'll need names for other characters, plus he still doesn't have a real name.

What fun -- you can always change a name when a better one comes along -- I think it will be fun to make a list -- I will add anything that comes to mind -- we should have a good list by the time you actually need to choose.
Whether you use any of them or not it will be fun to make the list -- of course he couldn't use his real name -- oh no -- his identity would have to be a big secret. I had never considered how hard it would be to name all the characters in a book -- see what insight you are providing -- all these years --- reading and I never even thought about it !
