Let the discussions begin and to tempt those not yet committed I shall post a tidbit or two now.

Maerad of Pellinor

Maerad of Pellinor is the central character of The Naming and The Riddle. At the beginning of the books, she is sixteen, an orphaned slave in an obscure mountain settlement, from which she is rescued by the Bard Cadvan. Their chance meeting reveals that she is descended from a famed family of Bards from the School of Pellinor, and that she is the One, prophesied to save the land of Edil-Amarandh from the Nameless One in his second rising. Although she possesses terrifying powers that make even her friends afraid of her, she is still a young girl, confused, lonely, and afraid of her destiny. Despite her destiny, by nature she is bookish, and her dearest wish is just to be an ordinary Bard and study the Lore of Edil-Amarandh, making her a reluctant heroine.

I do like Cadvan very much.

Cadvan

Cadvan of Lirigon is Maerad’s mentor. He was born in the northern city of Lirigon and comes from a poor family. A taciturn, haunted man with dark secrets in his past, he is a loner, but is also generous, kind, and quick-witted. He is considered one of the greatest Bards of Annar. Although disliked by some for his arrogance, he is capable of inspiring deep and loyal friendship. He discovers Maerad as a slave and quickly realizes that her Gift of Barding is beyond the ordinary, being the first to suspect her true destiny. He guides her on her quest, although as Maerad comes into her power, he discovers that she is more often guiding him.

I wil definitely start it as soon as I finsh the sequel I'm reading. It won't take long. I'll probably spend all day Saturday reading it. During the week, I barely get a few spare minutes to open my book, but I always keep it with me should the chance arise.
